Description: The underwater battle sequence is the action highlight of the film and is a significant set-piece within the James Bond franchise as well. The sequence is bookended by action of the aerial variety, and staged on the y-axis, commencing with U.S. Navy frogmen parachuting to intercept Largo’s transfer of a nuclear bomb, and ending with Bond and Domino who are transferred from a raft to an overhead aircraft [Figure 1 and 2]. The sequence itself is also notable for formalizing the convention in the franchise by bringing a film to a close with a major battle [Figure 3], a convention already manifested in Goldfinger (1964) and reappears in You Only Live Twice (1967). The sequence also exhibits a series of action scenarios, primarily the transformation from a pursuit to an escape mode when the Disco Volante’s hydrofoil detaches itself from the rest of the boat [Figure 4].
